Underage Drinking the Focus of a Meeting in Mercer County

Posted: Updated:

The Mercer County Creating Opportunities for Youth (COFY) Coalition is teaming up with students from Concord University to host a Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking.

The event scheduled from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 will take place in the ballroom of the Jerry L. Beasley Student Center at Concord University.  It is part of a national initiative sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The coalition has partnered with Concord professor Dr. Joan Pendergast and students enrolled in Concord's social work department to host the event.  Student attendees will be involved in a moderated discussion about the dangers of underage drinking and identification of solutions.

"This event is unique because it is not just another lecture," said Kelli Blankenship, program coordinator at Community Connections. "We're seeking an open dialogue with young people to identify potential prevention strategies to alleviate underage drinking throughout the Mercer County community."

Members of the Mercer County community including law enforcement and prevention advocates are invited to attend.  Refreshments will be served.
