John Henry Statue to be Removed

Posted: Updated:

The John Henry statue has been standing above the Great Bend Tunnel in Talcott since the 1970's, but on Wednesday it's set to come down.

The iconic statue is being removed for repairs on Wednesday, April 25th.

Union Concrete workers will be in charge of removing the 2.5 ton statue from its pedestal.  The statue is set to be loaded onto a trailer and moved to a local resident's shop for repairs.

Once the repairs are made the statue will be relocated inside the John Henry Historical Park near the mouth of the Great Bend Tunnel.

The relocation of the statue will be one of the final tasks to be completed of the park's construction which includes building an entrance road to the park and a parking lot for visitors.

Sculptor Charles O. Cooper of Williamston, Michigan created the eight foot tall statue.

The Hilldale/Talcott Ruritan Club commissioned the statue.
