Second Fall Break Recommended for WVU Students

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -

A Faculty Senate panel at West Virginia University is recommending a second break during the fall semester, starting in 2013.

The Dominion Post said the Executive Committee unanimously recommended the new calendar Monday, but it requires approval by the full Faculty Senate.

Under the proposal, classes would start Aug. 19, 2013. Students would get a two-day break Oct. 7-8, creating a four-day weekend, then their usual week off for Thanksgiving.

Administrators said they need to check the dates for the early fall break with athletics to ensure they don't coincide with a home football game

Classes would end Dec. 10, and final exams would begin Dec. 12.

Advocates said the proposal won't affect labs that meet only once a week. That had been among previous objections to the idea.
