Bluefield ‘Clean Sweep’ Program Set for May

Posted: Updated:

Residents of Bluefield who have been itching to do some spring cleaning around their yards will be getting assistance from the city soon, as the annual "Clean Sweep Campaign" kicks off Monday, April 30.

From April 30 until June 1, city sanitation crews will collect yard waste and natural vegetation and yard wastes from city residents at no additional cost. Normally, disposal of these kinds of items requires a special trash pickup and additional fees. Items that are not yard waste, vegetation or brush are not eligible for pickup as part of the program.

During the month of May, the city will be divided into 4 zones, and each zone will have a designated week for pickup. Items for pickup can be placed at the normal pickup location as early as the Sunday of the week designated for that zone. Items placed for pickup prior to that week are subject to the normal fees and ordinances.

The following guidelines were issued in a press release by the City of Bluefield:

Basic Guidelines:

A. The project is open to City residences or businesses, only, which have City garbage service. The free pickup will be suspended and normal City fees and ordinances will apply to anyone "carrying in" debris from out-of-city locations, or who does not subscribe to City garbage pickup.

B. Items for pick up must be placed in your regular trash pickup location. Please place all items you want picked up out at the same time, so City crews won't have to make multiple stops at the same location.

C. Do not place any items out for pickup prior to the Sunday of the week designated for your neighborhood. Items placed for pickup prior to or after the designated days for your neighborhood, will be subject to normal fees and ordinances.

D. Loose items need to be secured against becoming wind scattered.

E. Any item for pickup must be placed outside no later than 8 a.m. on the Thursday of the week designated for your neighborhood.

F. Large items including furniture, mattresses, appliances, debris and garbage that exceed normal garbage limits will not be picked up. These items will still require a special trash pick up.

G. Items picked up are strictly limited natural vegetation, yard waste, tree trimmings, etc.

H. Hazardous materials (car batteries, solvents, oil or fuel, etc.) will not be picked up.

I. Construction or demolition debris will not be picked up.
