Authorities are investigating the embezzlement of funds from the Mercer County Sheriff's tax office.

Sheriff Don Meadows tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the embezzlement began in 2004.  Meadows said he became aware in October 2011 that there might be a problem.

Results of an investigation by the sheriff's department have been given to the prosecutor's office. The state auditor's office also is investigating.  Prosecutor Scott Ash tells the newspaper that he's awaiting a report from the auditor's office. He says the amount taken is less than $20,000.

No arrests have been made.
