PRINCETON -

Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows confirms there is an open investigation looking into a person embezzling funds from the Sheriff's tax office.

Sheriff Meadows said the embezzlement began in 2004 and less than $20,000 was taken.

He said because such a small amount was taken that is why it took several years to discover.

"They are looking for signs there that something is going on and that is what the auditor looks for. They are looking at a 25 million dollar budget and they are looking for something that really jumps out at them. A couple thousand dollars really doesn't jump out and that's what makes it so hard," Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows said.

Meadows said the investigation has been turned over to the state auditor and an external agency for review before they take action or file charges.
