MERCER COUNTY -
For the entire month of may the Health Department will have a tire disposal drop off at different locations throughout Mercer County and folks with the Health Department say getting rid of these tires can help prevent some unwanted pests.
"Not only are they ugly but they say a lot of mosquitoes and a lot of disease come from the tires," Skip Crane a Volunteer in Bluewell said.
"One of the things that we have found is a tire swing somebody gets a old tire swing they need to make sure they can drain the water out of it," Melody Rickman with the Mercer County Health Department said.
Melody Rickman said there is a health concern when old tires are in peoples yards
She said they can collect still, stagnant water making a perfect breeding ground for unwanted pests. But tires are not the ONLY breeding ground for disease spreading mosquitoes.
"Cleaning out your gutters for one thing because when the leaves get it in them that's a good place and any where that there is still water," Rickman said.
And folks in the city of Bluefield are getting a helping hand removing some of that vegetation.
"All that natural vegetation is tough to get rid of so what we've done is provide an opportunity for residents beginning today and running till ay 25th in 4 areas of town, our crews will come by and pick it up for no charge," Andy Merriman Bluefield City Manger said.
