CHARLESTON -
More than 200 eighth graders from across the Mountain
State's 55 counties will converge
on the state capitol Thursday, May 3, to be inducted as Knights and Ladies of
the Golden Horseshoe.
The Golden Horseshoe awards are presented each year to
students in 8th grade who perform outstandingly well on a test that
measures students' knowledge of West Virginia's
history.
The award takes is name from early in the days of Virginia's
colonial days. Then Gov. Alexander Spotswood saw the need for westward
expansion across the Allegheny Mountains.
When the explorers returned from their sojourn across most
of what is now West Virginia,
Spotswood presented them each with a golden horseshoe inscribed with a Latin
phrase that translates to "Thus he swears to cross the mountains."
The Golden Horseshoe test has been given in West
Virginia since 1931, making it the longest running
program of its kind in the country.
The Golden Horseshoe award ceremonies will kick off at 9 a.m. Thursday morning on the steps of the
state capitol building, and will include a group photo, induction ceremony and
reception at the capitol rotunda.
