CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

The West Virginia Division of Highways is trying to raise awareness about work zone safety.

The issue was the subject of a news conference at the state Capitol on Wednesday, May 2.

Officials said about 10 percent of work zone accidents involve workers, while the rest involve drivers and their passengers. Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox said these accidents are preventable. He urged drivers to slow down and stay alert.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous reminded drivers that speeding fines are doubled in work zones.

The state Department of Transportation has created a series of web videos called "Beyond the Barrel" featuring the personal stories of highway workers, contractors and others. They can be viewed on the department's web site: www.transportaton.wv.gov .
