BLUEFIELD -

The warmer than usual temperatures did not stop children from enjoying the sunshine at Bluefield City Park Thursday.

With highs reaching in the upper 80's one mother said water and sunscreen help make the warm day more bearable for outdoor activities.

"Kids wanted to come out and play a little bit. They love to go feed the ducks. So we'll go and walk the creek, feed the ducks and have a little picnic," said Nikki Goodson from Bluefield, Virginia.

Despite having a mild winter, park goers are happy to let their kids release their energy outside in the sunshine.

"We tried to come over here a few times and the park was closed. It's great to be able to get out on a nice sunny day and get a little bit of sun and enjoy ourselves," said Goodson.

While many people are excited to welcome the warm spring days, people who work outside said they prefer the cooler weather.

"You can work hard enough to warm up, but when it's 100 degrees outside and humid, it makes it pretty hard on us," said Wayn Kees with the Bluefield Sanitary Board.

Employees with the Bluefield Sanitary Board spend nearly 10 hours working outside each day, and they said the warm weather is more challenging than enjoyable.

"It makes everything a little bit harder because first off, you get all hot and sweaty. It wears you out quicker and you've got to drink water like it's going out of style just to keep from losing it sometimes," said Kees.

The Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce celebrates 90 degree days by giving away free lemonade.

The chamber's president said last year was the first time in 70 years that May had a 90 degree day.

"As far as our records go that's the only time we've reached it in the month of May. It was kind of a milestone year. It appears we might get there this year though," said Marc Meachum, chamber president.
