Bluefield Curbside Recycling Program Marks Milestone

BLUEFIELD -

The city of Bluefield is celebrating a milestone in their free curbside recycling program.

When the program first began in 2007, it took 14 months to collect 100 tons of recycled materials.

At the beginning of April, Bluefield reached the 600 ton mark, and collected their last 100 tons in just six months.

"We're saving a lot of space at the Mercer County landfill, and see that's going to make that landfill last a lot longer. We're saving natural resources by recycling a lot of items. We're saving trees and oil," said Mel Saunders, the recycling coordinator.

Saunders said adding "mixed paper" to the recycled items list has helped the program grow.

The curbside recycling program is free for businesses and residents, and picks up recycled materials once a month.
