West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Speaks to Lewisburg Attorneys

LEWISBURG -

When the economy takes a hit, the need for legal aid grows instantly.

West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Brent Benjamin was in Lewisburg Friday to speak to attorneys about providing free legal services to people in need.

Legal aid is part of the legal services corporation and it assists people who cannot afford an attorney by providing free access and support for legal matters.

"Unfortunately, they rely on taxpayers for funding and that money has been less and less over the years. Right now they're at a point where there are less than 50 attorneys for 55 counties," said Justice Benjamin.

Justice Benjamin said the Logan County office was recently shut down because of cut-backs.

His speech also involved the supreme court's initiative to help the lower class have access to the civil justice system.
