BECKLEY -

Over 100 students gathered today in Raleigh County, as Concord University's Erma Byrd higher education center hosted a model United Nations competition.

Students from Woodrow, Princeton and Shady High schools were on hand to participate in the event, which requires students to choose a country, research its policies, and then debate international issues as that country.

Participating students say that the research skills gained through activities like the model U-N will undoubtedly help them in the future.

"It's a good way to be able to take stances on things, to be able to have good solid opinions and be able to do research on those opinions and cultivate those as you get older," said Shady senior Richard Hill.

Students who participated in the event agree that even though certificates are given to the winners, the satisfaction of bettering themselves is the ultimate reward.
