With about a month to go until tens-of-thousands Boy Scouts and their families will be touching down in the mountain state for the National Jamboree, the National Park Service is busy training volunteers. 59News
Alpha Natural Resources has awarded $149,000 in annual scholarships to 96 high school students in seven states including 34 from West Virginia, 10 of which are from the 59 News viewing area.
The company's High School Scholarship Program awarded the funds to students in West Virginia, Southwest Virginia, eastern Kentucky, northeast Tennessee, western Pennsylvania, Illinois and Wyoming, according to a news release from the company.
Alpha plans to give away $576,000 through the program during the next four years, the news release states. The company's long-range plan is to provide scholarship assistance to up to 500 students during the next decade.
"Education is the key to the success of our young people, CEO Kevin Crutchfield said in the news release." Alpha is committed to doing its part to help students achieve their goals through a college education. We are pleased to be able to make a difference for so many future leaders."
