Students in Raleigh County get a U.S. history lesson from the men and women who helped shape it.

Veterans from the American Legion in Beckley visited with fifth graders at Daniels Elementary on Monday afternoon.

They were there to teach students the proper handling of the American flag, and more importantly, what it represents.

"Freedom is not free. These gentlemen are the reason we have the freedom we enjoy today. We should always honor and respect our veterans," said teacher Eric Lester, on what he hopes students take away from the day.

The ceremony concluded with a recitation of the national anthem and a performance of the taps on bugle.
