Two Virginia men have been charged following a traffic stop that allegedly resulted in one suspect attempting to run over a State Trooper.
On Saturday, May 56 at approximately 4 a.m., Trooper J. R. Tupper of the Gilbert Detachment, was assisting the Wyoming County Sheriff's Department in attempting to locate a motorist who had been reported to 911 as being possibly intoxicated.
When the vehicle was located on Route 52 near Godfrey Corner and a traffic stop was initiated, two people exited the vehicle and fled on foot. After a foot pursuit, Jonathan Stacy, 28, of Grundy Virginia, was apprehended by Trooper Tupper.
The other suspect returned to the vehicle and attempted to flee. Trooper Tupper was in the roadway returning to his cruiser when the suspect steered the vehicle into the wrong lane, toward the Trooper.
Because the Trooper was between a rocky hillside and a creek bank, with no way to escape, Tupper fired his gun in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Tupper was able to avoid collision, but the suspect managed to evade capture.
On Sunday, Virginia State Police located the vehicle used in the incident and arrested Matthew Hackney, 26, of Hurley Virginia.
Hackney has been charged with Attempted Murder following his altercation with Trooper Tupper. He was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with a wound to the arm.
Jonathan Stacy has been charged with fleeing on foot.
