FAYETTEVILLE -
Most counties across our region are embracing the electronic voting machines for people to cast ballots. But in Fayette County, paper ballots are still the norm.
"I think we are going to have a late night here going into the AM hours," Fayette County Clerk Kelvin Holliday said.
Fayette County is one of the last counties still using paper ballots.
Holliday said upgrading to electronic voting machines would significantly speed-up announcing the election results and would help relieve some of the work load.
"Even our county administrator comes in and runs ballots through with one of my staff members at the machine," Holliday continued.
That is the slowest part. That slows down the process in Fayette. It's a process that could take ALL night and keep voters and candidates on the edge of their seats.
Holliday said this election could play a key role in whether or not Fayette County sees these voting upgrades.
"The machines are very expensive and that has been a problem in the past. My push is to get that for the general election. A lot will hinge on how the county commission races in Fayette County will turn out today," Holliday said.
While the outcome of the election remains uncertain, one thing is for sure; workers, voters and candidates are all in store for a LONG night.
"You see counties like Raleigh County and even though they do have a bigger voter population than Fayette, they are done in time for News at 11:00 we will not be done in time for that. Look for an early morning finish in Fayette," Holliday said.
