RAINELLE -

Residents of Greenbrier County who are jumping head first into spring cleaning will be getting some assistance from the state government this week

The West Virginia Department of Education is bringing their "Mountain Pride Clean Up" program to Rainelle for the first time since the program's inception. During this time, everyone from Rainelle and the surrounding areas will have the change to drop off trash, tires and other refuse items free of charge.

Beginning on May 9, DEP "Litter Gitters" will write tickets and tag doors of properties that have unsightly or unhealthy refuse.

"The enforcement officers are not so much trying to punish as to provide an opportunity for folks to clean up their property," said DEP officer Sam Stalnaker. "On May 18th and 19th, the DEP will also provide as many large construction-sized dumpsters called roll-offs as needed for people to dispose of junk."

On those days, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., the roll-offs will be available to accept tires, mattresses, sofas and almost any other trash free of charge. Tires can be either on or off rims, and up to 10 tires per person can be dropped off. The dumpsters will be located near the National Guard Armory in Rainelle.

The Mountain Pride Cleanup is the latest in a series of efforts by Rainelle officials to tidy up the town. Last fall, a tire roundup netted approximately 3,200 old tires and an electronics sweep collected almost 20 tons of refuse.

Rainelle is currently looking for volunteers to help unload trash from private vehicles during the Mountain Pride Cleanup. Anyone interested in more information about volunteering is encouraged to call Town Hall at (304) 438-7191.
