Most West Virginia Republicans have decided they want to see Mitt Romney in the White House.

Voters elected Romney to be the Republican candidate 69 percent of the vote out of a crowded GOP field of five candidates.

Incumbent President Barack Obama defeated Keith Judd for the Democratic presidential nomination.

On the Republican ticket, Romney received 72,818 votes; Rick Santorum received 12,667; Ron Paul got 11,642; Newt Gingrich attracted 6,581; and Buddy Roemer earned 1,071.

On the Democratic side, Obama received 102,028, or 59 percent, while Texas inmate Keith Judd surprised many with 69,766 votes, or 41 percent.

Romney, 65, is a native of Detroit, Mich., and was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002 but did not seek re-election.

He ran for the Republican nomination in the 2008 presidential election but lost to John McCain.

A USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday showed that Romney was nearly tied with Obama in 12 swing states, with Obama leading Romney by 2 points.

Romney had already accumulated 847 delegates from primary elections prior to the May 8 elections.

Back in April, Romney released a statement aimed at West Virginia voters.

"While every state's economy is suffering under President Obama, West Virginia's is one of the few under active attack by Obama," Romney said in the news release. "As president, I will make domestic energy production a critical priority for our economic recovery.

"West Virginia's coal resources are a tremendous asset to the state and to the nation and I will encourage their development."

Romney was endorsed by several notable West Virginia Republicans, including former chief of staff to former Gov. Cecil Underwood Bill Phillips and several city mayors.
