It was an all Democrat primary in McDowell County in 2012. No Republicans threw their names into the hat in the primary election. Up for grabs were four seats on the Board of Education along with a County Commission seat, three Magistrate positions and the Sheriff.
Both the County Commission seat and the Sheriff were determined by a margin of around 1,000 votes. Martin West will run for Sheriff in November after defeating Mark Shelton and Kenneth Hicks. Meanwhile, Gordon Lambert beat out Kendrick King for the Commission seat.
Of the four candidates looking to take the three Magistrate positions, Steve Cox brought in the most votes, followed by Daniel Mitchell and Richard VanDyke.
On the Board of Education there were five candidates, but only four seats. Mike Calloway brought in the most votes edging out Georgia Muncey West to take the Brown's Creek District Seat. Kevin Wade and Jimmy Copolo took a pair of seats for the North Elkins District, and David Williams will represent the Big Creek District.
At the State level, Delegate Clif Moore, who has been in the news lately for driving under the influence, managed to take home the nomination for the 25th District. He beat out Ed Evans by only 200 Votes.
