LEWISBURG -
Greenbrier County voting officials were pleased with the 29 percent voter turnout for May's primary election.
The deputy county clerk said all 29 precincts turned in their results at the courthouse and did not have any major problems to report from the voting process.
The Greenbrier County Commission race was one of the most anticipated races of the primary, and current commissioner Betty Crookshanks, who has served the last 12 years, came in third place with 23 percent of the vote.
"I was surprised at her numbers. I think people were probably responding to the disagreements in the courthouse. They were probably responding to the fighting that's taking place. It's how I figure those numbers. Woody Hanna, who won that, appeared to not get involved in the fray," said Ron Miller, State Senate tenth district.
The Greenbrier County Sheriff's race was another race people were filing into the courthouse to hear about.
Jan Cahill received the Democratic nomination after he received 77 percent of the vote against his opponent.
Cahill said his victory margin will help give him momentum going into November's general election.
"It's exciting as a newcomer to this type of process. It feels really good. I just retired from the state police about three months ago and this is all new to me," said Cahill.
Cahill said he wants to bring professionalism and his law enforcement background to the Greenbrier County Sheriff position.
First-time politician Glenn Singer said he wanted to become a member of the House of Delegates 42 district to be the average guy's voice for Greenbrier County citizens.
After receiving nearly 30 percent of the vote for the house of delegates race, Singer said his door-to-door approach helped him better understand what the people in the county are looking for from their House of Delegates members.
"I've been welcomed into a lot of homes. I've heard a lot of what's important to people in this race and I'm really encouraged by all this," said Singer.
Singer's leading opponent, Steve Hunter received 30 percent of the vote for the House of Delegates race.
The two candidates will face another new comer, George Ambler, and a veteran House of Delegates member, Ray Canterbury in the general election.
