Greenbrier County Commission to Welcome Newer Member in November

LEWISBURG -

The county commission race was one of the most talked about races in Greenbrier County.

Current commissioner Betty Crookshanks has spent the last 12 years on the commission, but came in third place on the Democratic ticket with 23 percent of the vote.

State Senate member Ron Miller of the 10th district said voters were probably responding to the constant disagreements in the courthouse.

Democratic winner Woody Hanna has served on the commission in the past and wants to bring his experiences from the school system and the commission to the race.

"It's not like I'm going in there without knowing exactly what I want to do or it's a new experience. We worked with a budget when the budget was 4.3 million dollars at that time. The budget is now over 10 million dollars," said Hanna.

Hanna came out on top with 44 percent of the total vote.

He attributes his winning margin to his campaign efforts.

"I went door to door in the larger towns and I think that was probably the big difference," said Hanna.

Hanna's Republican opponent, Sherman McClung, is retired from the airline industry and said he is running for office to be a resource for all citizens.

"I want people involved and have their input because it's for the whole county, not for three people on the county commission," said McClung.

McClung wants to see projects implemented that will benefit both ends of the county.

"If we had basic water, city water, and basic sewer systems, this entire area at Alta, Sam Black and Dawson would grow," said McClung.

Hanna also has projects he wants to see through.

"I want to get the addressing system for the 911 system and complete it. We've got several budget issues we need to address," said Hanna.

Regardless of who wins November's race, the Greenbrier County Commission will welcome a newer member.
