Kurt Dettinger, general counsel to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, is preparing to return to the private sector.

Tomblin's office announced May 9 that Dettinger had filed a letter with the West Virginia Ethics Commission seeking an employment exemption, the first step in returning to private sector employment. Dettinger joined Tomblin's administration in November 2010 after Tomblin assumed the role of acting governor.

Tomblin said Dettinger has been "instrumental" in the administration.

"Kurt's leadership and intellect were vital to the success my administration has achieved over the last 18 months," Tomblin said in a statement. "In addition to navigating the legal aspects of my transition from senate president to governor, Kurt was instrumental in the development of several key pieces of legislation, including my Marcellus shale and mine safety bills. I extend to him my sincerest best wishes as Kurt re-enters the private sector and I look forward to continuing to work with him on matters of significant importance to our state – albeit in a different capacity."

Dettinger's replacement is Peter G. Markham, a partner at the litigation firm Guthrie & Thomas PLLC. Markham received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and holds law degrees from both West Virginia University and the London School of Economics. Before working at Guthrie & Thomas, Markham served as a law clerk to Robert B. King of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

There was no word on when Dettinger will return to the private sector.
