A voyage of the two Virginias retraces John Marshall's 1812 river survey.

Andrew Shaw and his crew made the treacherous journey up the James River to Greenbrier County in a bateau boat on Wednesday, the same kind of boat taken by U.S. Supreme Court Chief John Marshall two hundred years earlier.

The bateaumen stopped in Talcott Wednesday to talk to students at Alderson Elementary about the legendary voyage, and its impact on U.S. history.

"I think it's an awesome story what Marshall did.  When he was fifty-six, actually he turned 57 just a few miles upriver from where we are right now at the Graham house on September twenty-third of 1812," said Andrew Shaw, the bateau boat's captain.

The second stop is scheduled for Saturday at Batteau Beach in Hinton.

The voyage is sponsored in part by National Geographic.
