INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) -

A Northern Illinois University administrator has accepted the presidency of West Virginia State University.

The Institute school announced Wednesday that Brian Hemphill has been chosen by the Board of Governors after a nationwide search. Hemphill is vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Northern Illinois, a school of about 23,000 students west of Chicago.

If the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission approves the appointment, Hemphill will become West Virginia State's 10th president on July 1. He would succeed Hazo Carter Jr., who is retiring.

Hemphill earned a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Iowa and a master's degree in journalism and mass communications from Iowa State University. At Northern Illinois, he has been responsible for all aspects of student life and enrollment management.
