CU Hall of Fame Dinner Set For May 19 - Beckley, Bluefield & Lewisburg News, Weather, Sports

The Concord University Department of Athletics Hall of Fame will formally add four new members at the annual Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, May 19. Brian Atkins, Scott George, Phil Pratt and Kama Shaar will be inducted at the event, which begins at 1 p.m. at University Point on the CU campus in Athens.

Profiles of the Inductees:

BRIAN ATKINS: Men's Basketball, 2000-2004

The 6'8" forward from Winchester, Va. averaged 20.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in a memorable four-year career. He earned 1st Team All-WVIAC honors in all four of his seasons, making him one of just three players in conference history to do so.

Atkins also earned Honorable Mention All-American recognition four times, and was 1st Team All-East Region as a senior.

Under legendary head coach Steve Cox, Atkins was the WVIAC's Freshman of the Year in 2001, a season in which he led the league in scoring. Atkins topped the league in rebounding as a junior, and again as a senior. He is 4th on Concord's all-time scoring list with 2239 points, and is 3rd in rebounds, with 1144.

SCOTT GEORGE: Men's Golf, 2000-2004

George earned 1st Team All-WVIAC honors in each of his four seasons at Concord. His watershed year came in 2002 – he was the WVIAC Player of the Year, Medalist at the conference tournament and co-champion of the NCAA East Region tournament. He qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships that season and earned All-American status.

George played in 43 tournaments as a Mountain Lion, winning five. He posted a 74.6 career scoring average and was a member of CU's 2004 WVIAC Championship squad.

George also excelled in the classroom – he was an NCAA All-American Scholar in 2003 and 2004.

PHIL PRATT: Baseball, 2001-2003

Pratt was an integral member of Concord's 2001 team, which won the Mountain Lions' first WVIAC championship in 40 years. He was a 1st Team All-WVIAC player in all three of his seasons at CU and twice earned All-North Atlantic Regional Tournament accolades (2001, 2003).

In 2001, Pratt led the WVIAC in runs batted in per game (1.19) and home runs per game (.32). He was fifth in RBIs per game in 2002 and 2003, fourth in doubles per game in 2002 and second in home runs per game in 2003.

Pratt posted a career .348 batting average, with 38 homers and 170 RBIs. His 15-home run campaign in 2003 still stands among the top slugging seasons in WVIAC history.

KAMA SHAAR: Women's Basketball, 1992-1996

 Shaar was an All-WVIAC standout three times in her career. She made the 2nd Team as a sophomore, and earned 1st Team honors as a junior and a senior.

Playing for head coaches Russell Hill and Will Johnson, Shaar scored 1619 points during her time at Concord, good for 5th on the program's all-time list. She also grabbed 620 rebounds.

Shaar, who stays active and works as a personal trainer, also played tennis for Concord her junior and senior years.
