President Obama's declaration that same sex couples should be allowed to marry is attracting both strong praise and criticism.

Polls show Americans split down the middle half supporting same-sex marriage and half opposing it.

"I personally don't care, but I think people around here will be bothered by that," said Beckley Resident Sarah Janey.

Cathy Wingrove from Raleigh County disagrees with Obama's announcement, "I just think it goes against everything God puts together."

President Obama's campaign is already out with a new Internet ad calling his Republican opponent Backwards on Equality.

The president's declaration that same sex couples should be able to marry.

"I personally have a different view but he's the President," said Adrine Hopkins from Beckley.

Erica Lively from Raleigh County said it everyone should be able to have their own opinion on the topic.

The President's announcement comes as he heads to Hollywood for a big fundraiser with other high-profile supporters of same sex marriage.

The White House spokesman said the president is respectful of those who disagree with him and does not intend to make this a key campaign issue.
