CHARLESTON -
The search for a new Superintendent of Schools in McDowell
County is over, as the State Board
of Education has announced that former Raleigh County Assistant Superintendent
Nelson Spencer will take the reigns of the county's school system beginning in
July.
Spencer will replace current McDowell Superintendent Jim
Brown, who was recently selected as the new Superintendent of Raleigh County
Schools. He currently works as a state school improvement specialist focusing
on schools in McDowell County.
"I am excited by this opportunity," said Spencer. "I have
big shoes to fill, but I am confident the transition will be smooth. I really
look forward to working with the educators, parents and students in McDowell
County."
Previously, Spencer has worked as Director of Secondary
Schools, Director of Federal Programs, Principal, Assistant Principal and
Teacher with the Raleigh County
school system.
According to a press release from the West Virginia
Department of Education, the state Board of Education took control of McDowell
County schools in 2001, citing low
test scores dilapidated school buildings and a large number of uncertified
teachers.
Under state guidance, McDowell has made significant strides
toward improving the quality of schools offered. Advanced placement classes
have been added at all high schools, a new elementary school has been opened,
and a new high school is under construction.
