RAINELLE -
A two hour event planned for Friday night hosted by the Rainelle Police Department will focus on bike safety.
Kids and their parents are invited to bring their bikes for a party to learn safe bicycling. It starts at 5:30 p.m., but entries are accepted starting at 5 p.m. Mayor Andrea Pendleton said that Rainelle has applied for substantial funding under the Department of Transportation's Safe Walk to School program. The funding will allow the town to improve the sidewalks leading to the new Rainelle Elementary School.
"When I was growing up here, we could safely walk to school," said Mayor Pendleton. "Our two-man police department is working with the Town to help make our streets safe for our children."
The children and their parents will learn how to be aware of surroundings and events that they may come across while on a bike ride in town.
"Children form 4 to 13 will hear about safety and then practice on a fun and challenging bike course lined with cones in the Heritage Park parking lot," said Rainelle Police Officer James Layne.
"Everybody in the Police Department and town government want our children to be safe while enjoying the pleasures of childhood, like bicycling," added Chief J.P. Stevens
Chief Stevens announce that the first 100 children to register will be given a free bicycle helmet. Other free prizes include more than 200 stickers. One grand surprise prize will be awarded at the end of the bike safety event.
