The WV Younger Member Forum of the American Society of Civil Engineers joined the Nick J. Rahall II Appalachian Transportation Institute and the West Virginia Department of Transportation for a competition among student bridge designers.
The WV Statewide West Point Bridge Design Contest took place on the Huntington campus of Marshall University May 11-12 with 30 middle and high school students competing.
The contest is to provide students with a realistic, engaging introduction to engineering, bridges and transportation design concepts through a realistic, hands-on, problem-solving experience.
Eugene Ressler of the United States Military Academy at West Point, one of the creators of the design software, was a guest speaker at the event.
More than $7,000 in prizes were awarded, and all contestants won a minimum of $100.
Among high school awards, Stephen Chen and Peter Chen of University High School in Monongalia County took first place; Nick Bartusiak of Shady Spring High School and Aniket Zinzuwadia of Woodrow Wilson High School, both of Raleigh County, took second place awards; and third place honors went to Liam Pinion of Trinity Christian School and Michael Ramsey of University High School, both in Monongalia County.
At the middle school level, Anthony Chen and Kathryn Gerbo, both of Mountaineer Middle School in Monongalia County won first place; Marshall Cox and James Hitt, both of St. Frances de Sales in Raleigh County won second place; and Greg Shrewsberry and Chris Mounts, both of Summers Middle School in Summers County, won third place.
