ATHENS -

The 3rd annual "Night in the Art Gallery" reception is set to kick off Saturday at Concord University, opening a 2-week long display of artworks by students in Mercer County Schools.

The annual art exhibition, which is a partnership between Concord University and Mercer County Schools, aims to bring attention to the importance of art in local schools. Student work from PikeView, Princeton and Bluefield High Schools will be on display alongside work from Princeton and Glenwood Middle Schools, and 3 elementary schools.

"Art education teaches life skills such as articulating a vision, learning to solve problems, building self-confidence and self-discipline," said Dr. Lauri Reidmiller, Concord University Assistant Professor of Art. "Creating art strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, adding to overall academic achievement and school success."

The reception will take place from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the Arthur Butcher Gallery in the Alexander Fine Arts Center in Athens.

The reception will include an interactive component, as guests will be encouraged to create their own works of art, and watch demonstrations by Concord University National Art Education Student Chapter members. There will also be the opportunity to see pottery throwing demonstrations by Concord University Assistant Professor of Art Jamey Biggs.

The exhibit will remain on display until June 1.
