Neighbors Save A Woman From Her Burning Apartment

Posted: Updated:

A Raleigh County woman is pulled from the second floor of her home to escape flames and smoke surrounding her.

"She explained to me she opened the door and it was nothing but black smoke. She has a hard time breathing anyway," said Breanna Aikens who along with neighbors at the Oakmont Greene Apartment Complex sprang into action when their neighbors apartment caught on fire.

Before 10 a.m. Thursday morning the fire alarms sounded at the apartment's complex in Bradley.

An older woman whose name hasn't been released was trapped in her upstairs apartment.

Neighbors found a ladder, broke into the upstairs window and rescued the woman before fire fighters arrived.

"There was a black truck which was backed up to the window, and the lady was hanging out of the window. They worked really good getting out the window, she was scared," Philip Waters who watched volunteer fire fighters and EMT's work along with neighbors to save the woman.

Bradley-Prosperity, Pax and Mt. Hope Volunteer Fire Departments all rushed to the scene to control and blaze and determine how dangerous the blaze truly was.

Mike Fox with the Mt. Hope Volunteer Fire Department said the first thing fire fighters had to do was to find a water source, "and then do a quick search. Get the people out of the building and get them to triage and staging."

The woman was taken by ambulance to Raleigh General Hospital.  A neighbor was also injured and taken to an area hospital. No word on either of their conditions.

Fox attributes the quick response from all surrounding fire departments to voters who voted for the fire levy, "if that levy would not have passed there are a couple of fire departments that would have not been here response time would have been slower and there could have been a fatality. So thank goodness for the people of Raleigh County who voted for that."
