Funeral arrangements are still pending for a fixture of the National Park Service in southern West Virginia.
Park Ranger David Caldwell suffered a massive heart attack Tuesday.
Several attempts to revive Caldwell failed, and he was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Beckley Fire Capt. Joe Coughlin is also a seasonal park ranger.
He described Caldwell's death as a tragedy.
"David was a really nice fellow," Capt. Coughlin said. "He would do anything for you. He was always nice, always had something positive to say. He was a wonderful person. He was good with kids."
Caldwell provided educational programs for thousands of school children for more than 14 years.
He also served as the park's primary public information officer.
Officials with the National Park Service said Caldwell left a hole that can never be filled.
