Virginia Beach issues swimming advisory

Posted: Updated:
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -

Virginia Beach is prohibiting swimming in part of the Chesapeake Bay.

The city health department issued an advisory Wednesday for the area between Wake Forest Street and Rockbridge Road. The city says water testing showed that bacteria levels in the area exceeded state standards.

The swimming and wading advisory doesn't affect the oceanfront or resort area.

Signs will be posted on the beach alerting the public not to swim there. Health officials will continue testing the site until the water quality meets state standards.
