BECKLEY -

State Treasurer John Purdue will be in Beckley on Tuesday, May 22, to honor the grand prize winner of his office's "When I Grow Up" essay contest.

Ahmed Amir, a second grader at Maxwell Hill Elementary, will read the essay that won a total of $5,000, after being selected as a regional champion and having his name drawn from a random drawing. The money will be going into a SMART529 account, which can only be used to college-related expenses.

"We can't wait to allow Ahmed to read his essay in front of his peers and the hometown folks in Beckley," said Purdue. "His essay truly speaks from the heart. I was very impressed that a second-grader could be so sensitive to the needs of others."

15 regional champions were selected from more than 3,000 contest entries. Those students read their essays during a program at the State Cultural Center on May 1.
