WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Representatives from the National Association of Realtors are approaching Congress about a program that needs extended in order help homeowners overcome unpredictable weather.

The National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire on May 31, and the NAR is urging Congress to extend the program for five more years.

The insurance is a lifeline the mountain state relies on quite often.

"West Virginia has flood plains all over the state. The bottom line is you can't buy a home in a flood plain if you can't get flood insurance. Banks will not loan money on homes without flood insurance. It's a huge issue in West Virginia," said Ray Joseph, West Virginia Association of Realtors CEO.

NAR members say without the extension, the recovery of the housing market will slow down.
