Pools Set to Open this Weekend for the Season

Posted: Updated:

Communities are preparing their pools for opening day.

Saturday is opening day for New River Park swimming pool and the park system in Beckley.

Mayor Emmett Pugh says there are no price increases this year, and he hopes everyone will get out and enjoy what the city has to offer.

He said they're looking forward to a good season, but they are always looking for lifeguards.

Because New River pool is so large, there must be seven lifeguards on duty at all times.

"I guess there were 30 applicants and only five of them passed the prerequisite test, so it's very hard to get into," explained Mayor Pugh, "and you do have to be able to have some skills, have a definite skills set. So it's hard, but there again I think it's rewarding. I think it's a great job."

According to Pugh, if a person participating in the life-saving course for lifeguards will come to work for the city of Beckley, they will reimburse them for the entire price of the course at the end of the season.
