Boat Journey Recreation Comes Through West Virginia

Posted: Updated:

Six men from Virginia are attempting to recreate an 1812 boat journey from Lynchburg, Va., to the Kanawha River in what is now West Virginia.

The National Geographic Young Explorers grant program is supporting the attempt to re-navigate the route that U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall attempted 200 years ago.

Marshall and his crew got as far as Kanawha Falls in Glen Ferris.

Organizers say the group is retracing Marshall's journey in a replica of his flat-bottomed boat, the Mary Marshall.

Weather permitting, they'll be in Thurmond on Wednesday to navigate the lower New River.

They'll partner with Adventures on the Gorge as they run through the whitewater of the New River Gorge - the section Marshall and his men knew would be the most difficult.
