CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

A new wellness project aims to motivate West Virginians to get off their couches and be healthy.

LiveWell West Virginia is a collaboration of the West Virginia University Extension Service and the Charleston Gazette. The goal is to help residents achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles.

The project includes community wellness challenges and a web site that provides health and wellness information. The web site address is www.livewellwv.ext.wvu.edu.

A county-by-county challenge, Summer Steps, kicks off Wednesday, with a walk in Morgantown. Another walk will be held Thursday in Charleston.

Participants in the challenge will track on the web site the number of miles they walk, run, play a sport, ride a bike or swim. Mileage will be tracked from June 1 to August 31.  It is free to register for an account.

The winning county will be announced in September and designated as a "Live Well West Virginia Community."
