ALDERSON -

Students at Alderson Elementary School are getting to see the real meaning behind the concept of "Going Green" during the school's sustainability week.

A new extracurricular club known as the Go Green Machine was established at the school this year to help students explore themes related to protecting the environment.

As the program wraps up for the year, the school is celebrating a week of hands-on sustainability activities.

"They're starting to develop their interests and ideas and this helps explore their curiosity about the world around them," said Kevin Johnson, sustainability week co-coordinator.

During Wednesday's outdoor sustainability fair, farmers and representatives from different environmental agencies provided demonstrations and hands-on activities for the students.

"They are doing work in the forest and with homeowners and for the river and they're farmers," said Johnson.

"We're talking about problems we are creating, but more importantly we're talking about solutions to those problems," said Anna Osborne, sustainability week co-coordinator and teacher.

From saving energy to using recycled materials, the students are learning how to help keep the earth clean, and green.

They even played with toy cars.

"The sun powers them so we don't have to and waste energy," said Aly Vandall, a kindergarten student.

Some of the students said their favorite part of the fair revolved around the creatures.

"I got to see the chickens," said Alexis Dickenson, a kindergarten student.

"The bees are pretty cool because they make the honey," said Cody Wood, a kindergarten student.

Between making crafts out of plastic bags and playing with the solar powered race cars, the students had a fun day at school.
