Police Crackdown on Impaired Drivers Over Holiday Weekend

BECKLEY -

Nearly 35 million Americans are expected to hit the roadways in lieu of the Memorial Day weekend.

While drivers are gearing up for the four day weekend, police will be cracking down.

Officers across a seven county span will be conducting DUI checkpoints to stop impaired drivers.

Lieutenant Paul Blume with the Beckley Police Department says with millions of extra motorists on the roadways accidents are prone to happen.

"Historically, it's one of your bigger weekends when you have more crashes, more fatalities involving drinking and driving," said Blume. "Hopefully we'll be able to target this and bring those numbers down"

Blume adds that officers will be conducting DUI checkpoints, but they'll also be on patrols looking for impaired drivers.
