Orange flames lick at the roof of the coal mine, heat building and visibility dropping as smoke begins to fill the underground passageway. Then, with the push of a few buttons on a hand-held remote, the flames flicker out, the smoke dissipates and the lights come on. The roar of fire is replaced by the trickle of nearby water.

A new Marshall University energy project will demonstrate hydroelectric power using acid mine drainage from coal mining as its source of energy.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A partnership involving Marshall University will be installing a solar panel system at Morgantown's University High School.

The Center for Environmental, Geotechnical and Applied Sciences and the West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Center at Marshall are teaming on the project with the state Division of Energy's Office of Coalfield Community Development.

Marshall says the partners have been working over the past year to locate renewable energy applications on former surface-mined properties.

Brownfields Assistance Center project coordinator George Carico says University High School is located on a reclaimed surface mine site.

The project includes $55,000 in federal, state and county funding.

Earlier this year, the partnership installed a solar panel system at Mount View High School in Welch.
