Safety Precautions for Grilling Season

LEWISBURG -

As we celebrate Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start to summer, it is time to open up the grill and start the cookout season.

Cookouts often provide entertainment and good food, but grillers must also be aware of the safety precautions involved with using a gas grill.

"If the grill hasn't been cleaned and there's a lot of grease in the bottom, that could end up causing a fire once the grill gets going and the fire drips down in it. So clean your grill out good and the biggest thing is it being attended," said firefighter Larry Pierson.

Pierson said to never leave a grill unattended and keep children from playing too close to the hot grill.

Leaving the grill unattended could enlarge the flames and cause loose materials near the grill to catch fire.

He said you also need to turn off the gas tank as soon as the grilling is finished.
