Thirty-three teams tried to keep their plywood-and-duct-tape boats afloat during the Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta in Key West, Florida Sunday afternoon.

But the offbeat vessels' marginal seaworthiness meant maximum fun for hundreds of spectators.

Rules of the wacky Memorial Day Weekend regatta required each team to build a boat out of a 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood, two 8-foot-long two-by-fours, a roll of duct tape, a pound of fasteners and paint.

While many got "that sinking feeling" shortly after launching, a few proved surprisingly seaworthy.

Prizes were awarded for the fastest boat, most creative design, best paint job, sportsmanship and best costumed entry - while the dreaded "sinker" award recognized the least seaworthy vessel.
