Ten West Virginia Schools have been named Schools of Excellence for the 2012 to 2013 school year and three are right here in Southern West Virginia.
Schools of Excellence are selected based on the following criteria; a rigorous and challenging curriculum, a safe and drug free environment, participatory leadership, active teaching and learning, and environment that strengthens teacher skills, documented student achievement, and implementing advanced innovated programs.
There is a long application process to even be approved and then campus visits are given to those who reach the next step.
Princeton Primary is one of the local recipients for the Schools of Excellence award, and for school leaders it came down to a team effort.
"It's a collaborative effort it's just not about one part of the school it's not about administration. It took everyone working together and everyone involved," said Princeton Elementary Principal Lori Comer.
Fayette Institute of Technology in Fayette County and Raleigh County's Liberty High School were also awarded with the distinction of Schools of Excellence for 2012 to 2013.
