Mercer County Elementary School students have been reading and studying for months for Battle of the Books, and Tuesday afternoon all their hard work was put to the test.

Six to seven students from each of Mercer County Elementary School competed against one another to find out how well students were able to comprehend a list of books assigned to each of the teams.

In the final round Sun Valley took on Mercer School and Sun Valley ended up beating the pirates.

For organizers just being involved with Battle of the Bands is the true reward in the end.

"Reading is the key to everything," says Tom Chaffins who is the Coordinator of People Services.

Chaffins said the students worked hard for their achievements, "its also part of the extra curriculum in term of doing outside of the box."

Wednesday Mercer County Middle schools will go head to head in the battle of the books at Bluefield State College.
