ALDERSON -
Students from all grades at Alderson Elementary had the
chance for some hands-on learning about river ecology on Tuesday, as they visited
the Greenbrier River
Interpretive Center
as part of sustainability week at the school.
National Park Service Ranger Mark Bollinger hosted an
exhibit about creatures that live in river environments, with live creatures
like crayfish and small aquatic insects that the students could handle and
touch. AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer Amanda Sandridge, on behalf of Frends of the
Lower Greenbrier, gave a lesson on the importance of each creature in the river
and how they can be used to assess water quality.
Volunteer Kevin Johnson was also on site with a hand-made
cedar canoe, which he used to teach about traditional boat making practices.
The Greenbrier River
Interpretive Center
was opened by Alderson Main Street President Judy Lewallen especially for the
students.
"It's great to see all these kids here," said Lewallen. "We
hope they will come back and bring their parents when the scale model of the Greenbrier
River watershed is completed by
members of Friends of the Lower Greenbrier
River."
