Miners Start Season With No-Hitter

The West Virginia Miners opened the 2012 season with a no-hitter, en route to a 5-0 win over Slippery Rock Wednesday evening at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

Starter Sam Lewis pitched seven innings without giving up a hit. He struck out seven batters and walked three as well.

At the plate, Matt Chavarria went 2-3 with two runs batted in.

The Miners then won the second game, 2-1.

Grant Williams drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom on the seventh inning to win the game.

Pitcher Jared Messer gave up four hits and one run in seven innings of work.

West Virginia is now 2-0 and hits the road to play Butler Thursday and Friday.
