A group whose mission is to help children have safe and healthy summers while keeping their minds at work is spotlighting a West Virginia program.

The National Summer Learning Association held a meeting this week in Baltimore to launch its Healthy Summers Campaign.

The group's report highlights research showing that children can gain weight two to three times faster during the summer than the school year, and that health eating and physical activity habits during the school year can be reversed when school is out.

The report singles out Energy Express, is a summer reading and nutrition program for children in rural and low-income communities in West Virginia. This year's program will take place in 78 sites across the state from June 7 to July 27 and about 3,000 children are expected to participate.
