LEWISBURG -
Teachers at Lewisburg Elementary School walked into their classrooms for the last time on Lee Street today.
As teachers packed up for summer, they were also packing to move to a new elementary school that will open in August.
The current school is going to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The school started as a first through twelfth grade school in the early 1920's before becoming a middle school and eventually, the town's elementary school.
One former student of Lewisburg High School said she hopes the new buyer keeps the landmark building.
"We need places for education outside of elementary. I hope someone will buy it and either turn it into something educational, or for senior citizens, or a nice set of apartments," said Mary Lindquist, a graduate of the former Lewisburg High School.
The Greenbrier County Board of Education started the bidding today at $500,000.
No one accepted the minimum bid, which means the Board of Education will review the contract at their next meeting.
